Chapter 16
Doris still wasnât home when Birdie returned, which wasnât unusual â she probably wouldnât be home until just after dinner â so Birdie plated the beautiful cupcakes on one of her mamaâs Christmas platters, setting the clear glass top over them, to show off the beautiful creations, and sat down with her supplies at the kitchen table.
Sheâd let Tabby out of her room to wander the house, since Mama wasnât home anyway, and the cat perched on a chair next to Birdie while she crafted her flyers. She used a calligraphy pen with sparkly gold ink on the green sheets, and a silver one on the red sheets.
Holiday stress got you down?
Call Santaâs Helper!
Thatâs right, direct from the North Pole, Tabby the Elf is here to take care of your wish list.
Need to decorate? Santaâs Helper!
Need gift wrapping? Santaâs Helper!
Need a server for your holiday party? Santaâs Helper!
Whatever you need to make your holidays bright â Santaâs Helper is your answer!
Call now!
Birdie cut little fringe tabs at the bottom of each sheet, and put the number to her new cell phone on them, so that people could just come up, read the sheet, and tear off a tab.
âThis is so exciting, Tabs!â She scratched the catâs ears absently.
Tabby yawned and settled her head down on her paws. Birdie lettered and snipped until her hands ached, then rubbed the back of her neck and rolled her head from side to side, listening to the little crackles in her shoulders.
âTime to get started on dinner, Tabby.â She gathered up all of her papers into a large Christmas-themed gift bag. âIâll drop these off at businesses around town first thing tomorrow morning, but right now, I need to get working on dinner, so Mama can eat when she comes home. And you, my furry friend, have to go back in the bedroom, so she doesnât catch us breaking the rules.â Birdie scooped up the sleepy tabby up under one arm, carrying her bag of flyers with the other.
Her creative juices flowing, Birdie decided to make a special dinner for her mother. She hoped that it might pave the way for a civil conversation where she could apologize. Sheâd been thinking all day about their last conversation and cringed when she replayed her rude behavior in her mind.
Doris Gentry lived very much in the present, taking one day at a time, and not wasting any energy by looking backward or forward. Surely she mustâve had dreams at one time, dreams other than being a wife and mother, and Birdie wondered what couldâve possibly gone so wrong that her mama had given up on really living, and had settled for merely existing. The thought made her sad. The way she had treated her made her feel even worse, and she spent the entire time that she cooked, rehearsing what sheâd say while they ate a delicious dinner.
Birdie went all out. She glazed a ham and put it in the oven, peeled and boiled potatoes
